The Brattle Theatre… It’s BACK!
This is incredibly exciting news, for Boston and for all small independent movie theaters, as this was not the case for many. When the Covid-19 pandemic hit, it hit theaters hard.
When I was in my 20’s, I lived in South Boston and would often find myself in Harvard Square with friends at the marvelous little theater that just felt so cozy, would play classic and new films and was just…the best. I took myself a couple of times, as my own date, too. The smaller theater, the sense of walking into history, into community, into a local spot, reminded me of being a little girl in Hollywood. These memories are the best, and every time I’m back in Boston, I try to go. In fact, anytime I travel, I keep an eye out for the local independent theaters, to get the feeling of being home away from home.
Ridley Scott said it best:
“In my view, the only way to see a film remains the way the filmmaker intended: inside a large movie theater with great sound and pristine picture.”
The Brattle 
Theatre, of course, is unique unto itself and is a great example of why a local independent movie theater is so important. Specifically, “it shows the best in classic, cutting-edge, foreign, and art-house films.” Showcasing films of all shapes and sizes perfectly reflects such audiences. Because of local theaters like the Brattle, independent films that should and must be seen but might not make it to the local Arc Light or AMC, are shown the way they should be: not on a small screen but on the large one. They give the respect that films should be given.
In the Fall of 2020, during the middle of the pandemic, when we all had no idea what was to come, I was asked to narrate a video on behalf of the Brattle. The video was being produced to help raise funds to keep the theater alive and running.
Can you guess what I said? It was a resounding “YES!” I was 100% on board to help out in my own small way. We collaborated, it was wonderful, and I was so thrilled with the outcome. Check out the video here, beautifully produced by Padrick Ritch:
